AURORA: LOVE + LIGHT FOR THE PEARL OF THE ORIENT SEAS

16 MARCH 2014
TOPANGA COMMUNITY HOUSE

Typhoon Haiyan, known as Typhoon
Yolanda in the Philippines, was an
exceptionally powerful tropical cyclone
that devastated portions of Southeast
Asia on November 8, 2013. Merely
four months after the record-breaking
tragedy, the media hype was practically
nonexistent, while survivors who lost
almost everything were still struggling
to get their lives back together. This
lack of media attention necessitated a
refresher—a reminder that the typhoon
victims were still very much in need of
our help.

With this in mind, Dawn Faelnar decided
to donate her 25th birthday to creating,
producing and curating AURORA—an
interdisciplinary media art exhibition +
benefit honoring the Philippines and the
victims of Typhoon Haiyan. A study and
exhibit of light as hope, energy, love
and renewal, AURORA was generously co-
sponsored by the UCLA Art|Sci Center and
the David Bermant Foundation.

All proceeds from donations and a silent
auction were directed to the non-profit
and government-free fundraising effort
co-founded by Faelnar, Rebuild Cebu.
