The beginning

The last day of the UCLA art sci program really is not the last. Just as no one truly dies, there is no end. As matter is simply rearranged after death, new faces come in, reborn, ready to give effort towards art and science. Inspiration has filled the minds of many young adults. As far as our perspective goes, there are infinite new possibilities in science and art. Whether you choose art or science, they both compliment each other, and they are necessary. The things I got to see were truly mind blowing. The plasma lab was unbelievable. Truly an art, more than a science. There are endless possibilities on where to go with your effort.

Now I am going to connect what I have learned in this course to my personal life. Wave forecasting is something viewed as a science, but know I can see it as an art. Waves come from wind, and wind comes from the weather. Weather forecasting is extremely difficult, especially with storms, and hurricanes. Storms are purely artistic. They are difficult to predict with science, and cannot be modeled perfectly with math.

It all starts off with the sun, when heat unevenly strikes the earth and creates pressure differences in the atmosphere. High pressure fills in to areas of lower pressure. Storms are areas of lower pressure. The lower the pressure, the stronger the wind. When wind imparts it’s energy into the ocean, it creates waves. These waves propagate from the storm. These waves can travel humongous distances, and become known as swells. In the summertime of california, deep winter storms off antarctica in the southern Pacific create waves that travel all the way to the beaches of southern california.

The waves follow physics, but they are artistic. Swells come in different shapes and sizes. Frequency and height combine with different factors, such as underwater bathymetry, underwater surface type, tide, and local wind to create unique waves for different beaches and different days. This all becomes an art. The perspective of looking at waves can even change. Looking at swells from a computer is different from the beach view. The beach view is different from the water view, and the water view is different from the surfing view. And to think this art all follows strict rules.

Surfing induces release of chemical neurotransmitters to give us a euphoric, excited feeling. All we feel is happiness, excitement, and a rush, but this has an artistic point to it as well. We dont see neurotransmitters in our head. All we see is the experience and feel the rush and happiness.
