During our lecture today, we discussed the potential dangers or using nanotechnology. I believe that we as humans need to continue our research and development of nanotechnology. Of course new technology comes with great risk, but it also comes with an enormous potential to make our world better.

During the Dark Ages in Europe, technological advancement slowed down dramatically and society and culture experienced great decline when the Roman Empire collapsed. European written history and achievements in building and culture were almost nonexistent. Society was extremely backward in comparison to the greatness of the Roman Empire. A similar occurrence can be seen in the Chinese Empire during the Ming Dynasty. During the voyages of Zheng He, China was the world’s most advanced and powerful society. China’s fleet was the largest in the world and remained unmatched by any other in size for 500 years with the Japanese fleet during World War Two.
Suddenly, the Ming emperor banned all ocean shipping and let China’s great fleet rot away. This effectively isolated China from the European technological advancements while China experienced technological decline and stagnation. Only recently has China been able to regain its position as a major world power.
The possible consequences of not pursuing new technologies and the benefits that it can bring far outweigh the possible dangers of pursuing it, as long as regulations are put in place to make sure that the new nanotechnology does not get into the wrong hands and to make sure that it’s safe before releasing it to the public. Our society is already in danger, as education and scientific research have been cut due to budget concerns, and if we don’t continue our research and advancement, our society could very well collapse.
