BIRD SONG DIAMOND

28 JULY 2014
UCLA SCULPTURE GARDEN

During a special one-day installation
of the ongoing collaborative project,
BIRD SONG DIAMOND: THE ACOUSTIC MAPPING
OF BIRD SONG NETWORKS, an acoustic
construction of hypersound speakers
amplified and presented sounds from
nature across the sculpture garden.

This outdoor presentation was one aspect
of a multi-year transdisciplinary
collaborative project between UCLA
Professors Charles Taylor (Evolutionary
Biology), Victoria Vesna (Design|Media
Arts), and University of Tokyo Professor
Takashi Ikegami and his students Atsushi
Masumori, Itzuki Doi, and Norihiro
Maruyama.

In this installation the viewers
experienced sound that was directed to
give the 3D experience of “viewing” the
soundscape from different angles and
reflections—similar to the reflections/
refractions of light commonly seen
through diamonds. The highly directional
hypersound speakers and motion sensors
created immersive, targeted soundscape
patterns, which in some ways were richer
than those that occur naturally. By
moving around the viewers were able to
view and review their sound environment
with a heightened awareness. The aim
was to leave the Birdsong Diamond
audience with new questions about their
soundscape environment.
